Employment

1905: Royal Prussian Aeronautical Observatory near Berlin, where he used kites and balloons to study the upper atmosphere.

1906: He and his brother Kurt broke the world endurance record by staying aloft for more than 52 hours in a hot air balloon.

1909: He lectured on meteorology and astronomy at the University of Marberg.

1914: He was drafted into the German army, but was released from combat duty after being wounded, and served out the war in the Army weather forecasting service

 

Publications

1911: The Thermodynamics of the Atmosphere - became a standard text throughout Germany.

1915: The Origin of Continents and Oceans.
