  • To examine the affects of earthquakes in countries of different levels of development.
  • To research two earthquakes: one in a more developed country and one in a less developed country.
  • To produce an essay examining the affects of earthquakes in countries of different levels of development.
 

An Earthquake in a Less Developed Country Task

Produce a five slide PowerPoint case study. The titles for each of the presentation slides are below. The earthquake you choose for your case study should have happened in a less developed country since 2000. A table of suggested case study earthquakes, with links to resources on Wikipedia and BBC News, can be found below the slide titles.

  • Some development indicators to illustrate the country's level of development.

  • Date.
  • Time of day.
 
Why did it happen?

Why did it happen?

  • What tectonic plates were involved?
  • What kind of plate margin/tectonic setting did it occur at?
 
Who was affected by it happening?

Who was affected by it happening?

  • How many people were killed/injured/made homeless?
  • How many buildings and industries were destroyed?
  • Is there an estimated cost of the damage caused?
  • What did the country's government do about the situation?
  • What did the international community do about the situation?
 
Geography Activities

What happened?

  • What was the magnitude (Richter Scale) of the earthquake?
  • Produce a paragraph that summaries everything on the Where, When, Why and Who slides.

The Essay Task

Examine the statement: "Earthquakes kill more people in less developed countries."

Consider the structure of your essay. Try and plan a five paragraph structure with the first paragraph being the 'Introduction' and the fifth paragraph being the 'Conclusion'.
