Key terms
- Containerisation
- A system of intermodal freight transport using shipping containers. The containers have standardised dimensions. They can be loaded and unloaded, stacked, transported efficiently over long distances, and transferred from one mode of transport to another without being opened.
- Dry cargo
- Non-liquid goods, such as coal, metals and grain, carried in large quantities by ship.
- TEU
- The twenty-foot equivalent unit, an inexact measure of container ship and port capacity. It is based on the volume of a 20-foot-long intermodal container, a standard-sized metal box which can be easily transferred between different modes of transport, such as ships, trains and lorries.
- Time-space convergence
- The reduction in travel time between places as transport and communications improve. It is measured by comparing the journey time between the same two places at different dates, for example Sydney to London in 1947 and today. The places are no closer in kilometres, only in time.
