Students should be able to:
  • Define globalization and evaluate the arguments for and against it.
  • Discuss the effect of globalization upon their own lives and the lives of others.
  • Describe the globalization of manufacturing processes focusing on where their clothes (or similar simple items) are made.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the operations of TNCs (Transnational Corporations) and how they can be positive and negative for countries - especially LEDCs.
  • Show understanding of some negative aspects of globalization and global sourcing, such as child labour and sweat shops.
  • Describe and explain the role of transport and communication in the spread of globalization.
  • Link the topics covered in this unit with the topics in the Year 9 Development unit.
  • Describe and explain the growth of global tourism.
  • Show understanding of sustainable tourism, the reasons why it is necessary and the advantages and disadvantages of it.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how tourism can be an aid to development and how important tourism can be be for the economy of countries, especially LEDCs.
  • Describe and explain the advantages and disadvantages of tourism.
