Students should be able to:
  • Understand the importance of coastal areas.
  • Apply existing knowledge related to erosional processes (Year 7: Rivers and Flooding) to marine erosion processes.
  • Describe the appearance and formation of erosional and depositional coastal landforms: cliffs, arches, stacks, beaches and spits.
  • Describe the process of longshore drift as a coastal transportation process.
  • Describe various coastal management methods - sea walls, groynes, revetments; rip rap and beach nourishment.
  • Evaluate the need for coastal management strategies at various sites and understand the conflicts that such projects may cause.
