Moodle Task One: Produce a Climate Graph for Vostok South Pole Station

Using Excel to Produce a Climate Graph

Step 1:
Open the Excel and in a cell near the top left type Month. Type January in the next cell, followed by February, etc.

Step 2:
Type Temperature (°C) in the cell below the word 'Month' and then enter the temperature data in the cells under each month.

Step 3:
Type Rainfall (mm) into the cell below the word 'Temperature' and then enter the rainfall data in the cells under each month.

Step 4:
Highlight all the data that you have entered and click on the Chart Wizard icon in the toolbar.

Step 5:
Choose the first type of Column graph and then carry on until you get to Step 3 of the wizard.

Step 6:
Type in the graph title e.g. Climate Graph of Anytown, then the x-axis label e.g. Months and then finally type in Rainfall (mm) for the y-axis.

Step 7:
Select the Legend tab at the top of the wizard and untick 'Show Legend'.

Step 8:
Click next and in Step 4 of the wizard choose the option ‘As new sheet’. Give it a name and click Finish.

Step 9:
The next task is to convert the temperature data to a line graph. Move your mouse over one of the temperature columns and right-click. From the option box that opens, choose ‘Chart Type’ and then ‘Line’ graph as the type of graph. The temperature data will then be plotted as a line graph.

Step 10:
The next task is to move the temperature line upwards. To do this, right-click on the line, choose ‘Format Data Series’ from the option box that appears, then select the Axis tab at the top and click on ‘Secondary axis’.

Step 11:
The final task is to add a label to the new y-axis on the right. To do this, click on the chart wizard again and move
through to Step 3. In Step 3, a new box should have appeared called ‘Secondary value (Y) axis’. Use this to enter a label for the temperature data e.g. Temperature (°C)

Step 12:
You can (after saving the graph) go back and alter any aspect of it e.g. the colours of the bars or lines, edit the title and axis labels, etc, etc.

 
Once you have produced your climate graph and you are happy that it is correctly labeled use geographyalltheway.com moodle to upload the Excel file so that your teacher can mark your efforts.

Moodle Task Three: Read a news article about over fishing in the Southern Ocean and make a comment upon a moodle forum.
 

Read the following article "Antarctic Wildlife at Risk From Over fishing, Experts Say" making sure you understand all the words and terms used.

Then make a comment on the moodle forum about what do think should be done about the situation. Feel free to make more comments after your initial comment to support or question the comments made by others.
