The Lynmouth Floods. The river Lyn burst it's banks after 229 millimetres of rain fell in 24 hours. 34 people died, with a further 420 made homeless. |

Great Sichuan Earthquake. Official figures state that 69,197 are confirmed dead, and 374,176 injured, with 18,340 listed as missing. The earthquake left about 4.8 million people homeless. |

Eruption of Mt Etna. The eruption of forced about 1,000 people flee their homes. Relief workers used bulldozers to build a high wall of earth to protect the tourist facilities. |
