Students should be able to:
  • Describe the structure of the earth.
  • Describe the rock cycle and link together sediments, lithification, sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks, igneous rocks, magma, heat and pressure, uplift and weathering and erosion.
  • The formation of sedimentary rocks - sandstone, limestone, shale, chalk.
  • The formation of metamorphic rocks - slate and marble.
  • The formation of igneous rocks - basalt and granite.
  • Understand the concept of geological time and the chronological order of key events such as the first reptiles, mammals, extinction of the dinosaurs and the arrival of the first humans.
  • Understand that different rock types produce different landscapes - granite, limestone, chalk.
  • Understand how mountains are formed.
  • Understand the different features that are found in a cave.
  • Eexplain how rock type influences the landscape.

  • Manipulation of a PowerPoint slide.
  • Research using web sources.
  • Follow a tour in Google Earth.
