The Medieval Castle Project

Area of Interaction - Human Ingenuity

The Castles:

England: York Castle

England: Warwick Castle

Scotland: Edinburgh Castle

Scotland: Caerlaverock Castle

Wales: Harlech Castle

Wales: Beaumaris Castle

Ireland: Blarney Castle

Ireland: Carrickfergus Castle

The Task

Your task is to develop an oral and written tour guide for a medieval castle. You will need to research the history of the castle and develop a guide for tourists visiting the area. A model of the castle is also a key requirement. The tour should take around 15 minutes when you present to the group.

The following points will need to be included in the written and oral guide:

1. Locational knowledge of the area.

2. History of the castle and the family(ies) that have lived there.

3. A description of the type of castle that has been built (stone keep, mott and bailey etc).

4. If possible who built the castle?

5. Why do you think that particular site was chosen?

6. A tour of the castle itself, going through the rooms describing the different layouts, dungeons etc.

7. Are there any myths or legends that surround the castle?

8. Bibliography (otherwise it is classed as cheating!!).

Remember

• To use your class text book, discussion notes and any research that you have completed.

• The brochure needs to be presented to a high standard to be published for the general publics’ use (i.e. colourful, neat, spell checked etc.)

The Model

The model will need to reflect the basic shape of the castle and where it actually stands. The model can be made out of a range of materials and it doesn’t have to be huge. Start saving toilet rolls, yogurt cartoons, drinks bottles, shoe boxes to help you to do this.

Assessment

All of the four criteria will be used to assess this assignment.
