Use the 'Chronology' section of the 'UNHCR Return to Afghanistan' site to list Push Factors under the sub-headings in your Word document.
Open and read the 'Afghanistan quick guide' to ensure you have an understanding of the major points.

The series of factors that attract a refugee to a country of asylum are vast. They will include perceived levels of safety from persecution, relative standard of living and distance decay.

To illustrate the relative difference in standard of living between Afghanistan and the main countries of destination complete the table in your Word document using the CIA World Fact Book.

Consequences for Destination Countries

There will be a range of consequences, both positive and negative for the countries of destination of the Afghan Refugees. These may include:

Cultural diversification and emergence of a more multi-ethnic society.
Unwanted jobs filled by cheap labour.
Discrimination against immigrants, particularly if members of ethnic minorities.
Pressure on food supplies, housing, jobs, services, etc.

Use the following three BBC news articles to brainstorm a list of consequences (in your Word Document) for the countries of destination. Include examples where possible.

Consequences for Afghanistan

The Refugee Crisis in Afghanistan will have had negative and positive consequences for the country. Negative consequences include:

Loss of human resources, e.g. labour, enterprise, skills.
Communities and regions drawn into a vicious circle of decline.
The splitting up of families and communities.

Watch the two videos 'Afghanistan Reconstruction' and 'One Million Afghan Refugees Return' and make notes in your Word document under the following sub-headings: Concerns of returning refugees; What are the returning refugees provided with before entering Afghanistan; How has the situation improved in Afghanistan.
