Choropleth maps have some limitations:
- No matter what the spatial scale, these maps represent only the average value for each of the units.
- Mean values are generalisations; they conceal spatial variations within the area they represent.
- The larger the spatial unit used in the plotting of data, the greater the degree of generalisation.
- Where neighbouring spatial units have different densities, the map gives the impression of a sudden break at the boundary between them.
