ClassTools.net adds 2 Circle Venn Template

Interactive venn_intro template
Uploaded with plasq’s Skitch!

Russel Tarr of ClassTools.net and activehistory.co.uk fame has added a 2-Circle Venn Diagram template to the existing 3-Circle Venn Template.  I will be using it when discussing hazards with my Year 9 students – defining hazards as Extreme Natural Events that interact with Vunerable Populations.

Tilt-Shift Maker: A Couple of Examples

Tilt-Shift Maker produces images that look like photos taken of models – they remind me of model railway landscapes.  Here are two that I quickly produced from some of my recent photographs – one of the Pen y Pass Hotel taken from the Pyg Track on the way up Snowdon and the second of the Barcelona skyline taken from the Sagrada Família.

They could produce interesting starter images.

tooble: YouTube > iPod

It’s all about making things accessible really.  The accessiility of revision material for our ‘busy’ students.  You may have noticed that under YouTube clips that have been embedded into geographyalltheway.com I have been adding the following icon:

The idea is to encourage students to use a service called ‘tooble‘ to download YouTube clips and add them to iTunes and therefore their video iPods.  tooble is a program available for both Windows and Mac OS X.  All you need to do is paste in the URL of the YouTube video and then tooble downloads it, converts it and adds it to iTunes so that it will be added to your iPod on the next sync.

The Wonderful World of Widgets

Over the last week I have been playing with widgetbox.com.

Widgetbox is a service that enables people to “find, make and distribute web widgets for blogging, social networking services, and personal websites”.  I have been doing some very simple things by turning RSS feeds into widgets.  The reason to make widgets is to make content easier to access for my students and virtual colleagues.

Here is an example taking the feed from this site:

The more ’serious’ ones I have done are for my IB Geography and IGCSE Geography students.  I have created feeds of recent, relevant news stories. The widgets can be seen on the following pages of this blog: IB Geography Widgets and IGCSE Geography Widgets – which can be accessed by clicking on the tabs at the top of the page.

They have been created by taking feeds from my delicious tags:

The widgets can be embedded into blogs, webpages, iGoogle pages, myspace, facebook etc – which means they can be very accessible for students.

Here is a final (for today) widget that took just 90 seconds to produce – you should recognise it – it’s the feed from Alan’s Living Geography blog:

If you have any questions about these – or you would like me to create a widget for you – just ask via the comments box.

Crossword Generator – EclipseCrossword

Another thing that I have meant to have posted about for a while – is EclipseCrossword.com.

Download a small program (Windows only) and run it to produce crosswords that can be printed off or added to webpages as interactive content.  The adding to webpages isn’t as easy as a simple embed but people who are relatively happy messing around with html shouldn’t have a problem.

I have used it several times on geographyalltheway.com and will be using it much more to produce plenaries and revision material.

Some examples can be seen by following the links below:

Possible Desktop Image for Geography Classrooms

I have had the image above bookmarked for a while – just thought I’d share.

I think it would make a good desktop image for anybody using an interactive whiteboard in their classroom – just a suggestion!

A larger version can be found here.

Panoye – Upload and publish panoramas

Panoye is a bit of a cross between flickr and YouTube – in a way.

It allows you to upload panoramic images that you have taken and then embed them like a video/viewer into a blog or website.

I’m currently enjoying messing around with panoramic images using focus lock on ly digital camera and then using Abobe Photoshop Elements for Mac to stitch the images together. You can see one of my recent efforts above and another here.

geographyalltheway.com Updates > geogalot

I have deleted geographyalltheway.com Updates :-( .  It had been hacked and was producing some sort of spam.  This meant that google dropped geographyalltheway.com from it’s searches etc and all was not well.

So …

Time for a fresh start and therefore geogalot.  The name ‘geogalot’ was thought up by one of my past IB Geography students and had been used on a previous forum project but has now found it’s natural home here.

geogalot will be a home for updates to geographyalltheway.com and my rambings about and expereinces of using ICT in Geography Education.

Update your RSS feeds, get commenting and enjoy.
