InThinking IB Geography Training: Recommendations Now Online

The feedback from the February InThinking IB Geography workshop for experienced teachers is now online here and can be read below.

'La Tempête Hivernale' – January Storm, South West France and North Spain, 2009

Task for IB Geography Students – being keen students like you are you have probably done this already, but: Produce a case study of the weekend’s storm focusing upon the flooding elements.

You case study needs to be structured around the 5 W’s:

What

What happened? Can you produce a timeline of the main events?  What flood defences are there on the Garonne (or tributary rivers)? Make sure there are facts such as maximum river height, area of flooded land etc that you can quote in your exams.

When

This could be combined with the ‘what’.

Where

Why

Why did the rivers flood?

Who

Who was affected?

Who did something about it?  How does ‘alert rouge’ work as a management strategy?

IB Geography 2009 Pre-Publication Guide Released along with Support Wiki

Uploaded with plasq’s Skitch!The IB Geography 2009 Pre-publication Guide (first exams 2011) was released today – and it available for download from the OCC.

To accompany the release of the Pre-publication Guide (first exams 2011) I would like to announce the opening of a wiki environment that has been developed in conjunction with three senior members of the IB Geography teaching community, namely Natasha Lardner Winnard and Jim Williams and myself.

The wiki is structured around the new syllabus content for both Higher and Standard level. You’ll find that each page contains a list of links that Natasha, Jim and myself have originally saved in Delicious, a fast-growing social bookmarking site, using a shared taxonomy and textbook references.

The wiki, by it’s nature, is developing and will continue to grow as we approach the teaching of the new syllabus.

You can join the wiki and get involved. At the moment members of the wiki can create and comment upon discussions about the resources – maybe to recommend addition resources or ask questions about the ones that have been suggested.

You can sign up for a wikispaces account here – there is no need to give a ‘Wiki name’ – and then go to the IB Geography 2009 Wiki and request to join. Anybody can suggest a resources here.

Have a look, let us know what you think and get involved. I hope that the wiki will grow with addition resources to make it an essential part of an IB Geography teachers’ toolkit!

AS / A2 / IB Geography – HIV/AIDS Source synthesis

A short induction exercise for my Year 12 IB Geography class in case they haven’t all been issued with their laptops before the start of the first lesson.  The work will be marked as an informal baseline assessment of study type skills.

Take the following three sources (print outs):

  1. avert.org: The origin of AIDS and HIV and the first cases of AIDS
  2. globalhealthfacts.org: People Living with HIV/AIDS (adults and children) 2007
  3. BBC News: The Aids audit: A mixed picture

Task

Read the three sources and then produce a one side of A4 summary.  The page should be split into three to cover the following three points:

  1. What is HIV/AIDS and where did it come from?
  2. What is the geographical distribution of HIV/AIDS suffers?
  3. What economic factors are making the situation worse?
