I will be presenting two workshops at the International Schools IT Conference at the British School of Brussels on Friday 5th – Saturday 7th June 2009. The details of the workshops can be seen below (taken from the Conference Programme).
Interactive Geography Teaching NEW
Sessions led by: Richard Allaway.
Ideal for all Geography High School Teachers
Session 1: 0900 – 1230
Making a Geographer’s Life Easier with ICT > Sharing, Online Tools, Blogs and Wikis.
This session will begin with “30 ICT ideas in 30 minutes” and then develop into an exploration of the three main themes – Sharing, Online Tools and Blogs and Wikis. This will be a hands-on session where participants can try tools out, set accounts up and evaluate the many online opportunities through various geographic situations.
Participants will look at social bookmarking, RSS feeds, YouTube, Google’s suite of applications, blogs, wikis, nings and various other online tools. Enabling them to see how these can be incorporated into their teaching and personal planning and preparation.
Session 2: 1330 – 1700
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on the Cheap
GIS are information systems that are designed for storing, manipulating, analyzing, and displaying data referenced by geographic coordinates. In other words, it’s all about adding value to maps. At its most simple this could be information on sheets of tracing paper put on top of a base map. At its most expensive this can involve software packages that are complicated and focused upon a single country. This session will explore online GIS opportunities including the effective use of Google Earth in the classroom. This is an important skill set for Geography teachers, as GIS becomes a compulsory element for some exam boards. Participants will explore existing online GIS resources as well as having opportunities to develop their own.
