A year or so ago I wrote a case study for the ‘Geography in the News‘ website about Antarctic Tourism. The article was written before the sinking of the M/S Explorer.
The article was written to support the teaching of the tourism section of the IB Geography Globalization Optional Theme (Section B) – Globalization: Tourism
- Recent changes in the tourist industry: Appreciate the expansion of tourism towards more exotic and remote destinations.
- Sustainable management of tourism:Appreciate the concept of sustainability and, with reference to two case studies, understand the management strategies adopted to conserve a tourist destination.
A study of Antarctica could be used as an example of how the extension of tourism towards increasing exotic locations on the global periphery can cause conflict.
You can read the introduction here – but to read the rest you need to be a subscriber to the ‘Geography in the News‘ site.
