iPod Touch/iPhone Quiz Applications >gFlash+

The Quiz Experience

gFlash+ describes itself as a ‘Flashcard and Trivia Application’ rather than a quiz creator – is there a great difference?  There is a trade off – I like the flashcard element for learning or revising material with the quiz features – but it isn’t a pure quiz application.  There is a quiz option and an multiple choice option.

The Costs Involved

gFlash+ is free.  The is a pro version that costs €3.99 with no advertising and a range of other features including the ability to add YouTube video clips etc.  I haven’t found the advertising to be a major issue on the free version.

The Easy of Constructing the Quiz

The iPhone has an on screen keyboard.  It’s not great – but it is OK.  However you wouldn’t be wanting to type a novel on it.  gFlash+ uses Google Spreadsheets to input the data for the flashcards/quiz.  You need to do is produce a two column spreadsheet and then share that spreadsheet with gWhizMobile@gmail.com in the same way as you would with somebody you were collaborating with.  The data now shows up in the gWhiz Catalogue from where it can be downloaded and used.

The Easy of Sharing the Quiz with my Students

All the students need to know is the name of the data set and they can find it and download it from the gWhiz Catalogue.  The quiz I produced is called ‘geographyalltheway.com > Population Key Terms’ for those who are interested.

The Easy of Producing a non iPhone / iPod Touch Version

A 30 second job – copy and paste the data from the Google Spreadsheet into the ClassTools Arcade Game Generator, add some asterisks and you are sorted!  The ClassTools version can be viewed here.

iPod Touch/iPhone Quiz Applications > Revision Materials

I am looking for a iPod Touch/iPhone Quiz application with the purpose of producing revision materials for my students.  Over the next week I will be reviewing four applications: QuizCreator, MultiQuiz, gFlash+ and iFliprLite.  I will try and write a review a day depending upon my band of student testers.  I will be using the same ‘quiz’ for each review – twenty Population Key Terms.

I will be reviewing the applications under the following five sub-headings:

  1. The Quiz Experience
  2. The Costs Involved
  3. The Easy of Constructing the Quiz
  4. The Easy of Sharing the Quiz with my Students
  5. The Easy of Producing a non iPhone / iPod Touch Version

'La Tempête Hivernale' – January Storm, South West France and North Spain, 2009

Task for IB Geography Students – being keen students like you are you have probably done this already, but: Produce a case study of the weekend’s storm focusing upon the flooding elements.

You case study needs to be structured around the 5 W’s:

What

What happened? Can you produce a timeline of the main events?  What flood defences are there on the Garonne (or tributary rivers)? Make sure there are facts such as maximum river height, area of flooded land etc that you can quote in your exams.

When

This could be combined with the ‘what’.

Where

Why

Why did the rivers flood?

Who

Who was affected?

Who did something about it?  How does ‘alert rouge’ work as a management strategy?

iPhone / iPod Touch Quiz Applications

I recently got an iPhone and am really enjoy using all it’s functions – it’s only been a week so there will be more posts on this subject in the near future.

I have noticed that more and more of students have iPod Touch’s (or even iPhones) and so I started to think about using them as a platform for revision material – making quizzes or similar – focusing in the first instance on my IGCSE classes.

Here is my wish list of functions for a iPhone/iPod Touch quiz making application:

  1. I’m looking at the iPod Touch/iPhone platform at the minute > thoughts on ‘video’ iPods to follow.
  2. It must be easy to produce the quizzes – so an online service or easy upload facility needs to be available.
  3. A quiz function rather than just a ‘flashcard’ function.
  4. It must be easy for me to share the quizzes with my students.
  5. Not all students have a iPhone/iPod Touch and therefore the quizzes also need to be available online through some sort of simulation/browser or it needs to be easy to use the original questions with an alternative quiz generating service such as ClassTools or Content Generator.

Has anybody got any ideas about which app to use?  Please add suggestions in the comments section for this post.

Geography in the News: Should I stay or should I go? Case Study Published

A year or so ago I wrote a case study for the ‘Geography in the News‘ website about Antarctic Tourism.  The article was written before the sinking of the M/S Explorer.

The article was written to support the teaching of the tourism section of the IB Geography Globalization Optional Theme (Section B) – Globalization: Tourism

  • Recent changes in the tourist industry: Appreciate the expansion of tourism towards more exotic and remote destinations.
  • Sustainable management of tourism:Appreciate the concept of sustainability and, with reference to two case studies, understand the management strategies adopted to conserve a tourist destination.

A study of Antarctica could be used as an example of how the extension of tourism towards increasing exotic locations on the global periphery can cause conflict.
